Last week’s Shout! Awards was a glitzy event with Sean Kingston and Jaclyn Victor gracing the stage.

IT WAS certainly a night of celebration at 8TV’s Shout! Awards held last Friday at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. Hundreds of people flocked to the stadium as the first-of-its-kind show promised a great line-up of popular artistes.

Besides reggae-rapper Sean Kingston’s performance and Jaclyn Victor’s special tribute to Michael Jackson, there was plenty of fun and frivolity, with awards being handed out to the best “Hot Chick” and “Hot Guy” as well as to Miss or Mr “Stylo”.

The show was indeed a big hit as many not only gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite local artistes, but also hosts Marion Caunter, Jien and Sarah Molko.

Pop Shuvit opened the glitzy event with its song Trippy Alice in Wonderland with rapper Jin Hackman and Caprice next. Captivating the crowds were also cheerleaders who skipped on to the stage to perform an energising dance number. Then an exciting display of pyrotechnics finally launched the show.

Among those who performed were One Buck Short, Komplot, Mia Palencia, Estranged, Shila, Bunkface, Nikki, Joe Flizzow, Rahim Maarof, Pesawat, Reza Salleh and Paolo Delfino. It was also exciting to see such collaboration between the artistes.

There were also a number of celebrities also came to present the awards, including Juliana Evans, Deborah Henry, Paul Moss, Fazura, Yasmin Ahmad, Pamela and Vanessa Chong, Jojo Struys, Nabil, Saiful Apek, Syafinaz Selamat, Paul Moss, Jehan Miskin, Fazura and Sarah Lien.

Pop punk band Bunkface swept the awards. Right from the very start when Bunkface won the Rockstar Award, it was clear the band was going to be in the limelight that night.

The band won two more stupendous awards that surprised even band members.

Fans of Bunkface who braved the traffic (Manchester United was training nearby) to see their idols were certainly not disappointed as the band walked away with the Rockstar Award, the Break Out Award (Best New Act) and the Ultimate Shout Award.

Looking astonished, the band members thanked their supporters profusely and promised them more great music in the future. Fans roared with excitement.

Later, lead vocalist, Sam, of Bunkface said: “From now on, everything we do will be a big challenge. People will see Bunkface as award winners and we need to prove ourselves. The quality of our music and performance style has to be superb and we will try to do our very best.”

“Bunkface is about giving something different and original to people. Maybe not in the world, but in Malaysia. We are proud of ourselves. We are inspired by all the successful bands out there and we learn so much from them,” explained Sam. “In every song we compose, we try to make it as interesting as possible, so everyone can sing along and have fun”.

In the limelight: Bunkface with its three Shout! Awards.

Bunkface gave an electrifying performance at Shout! Awards. Dressed very much like punk rockers with cool glasses, black leather pants and jackets, the threesome exploded on stage with their favourite number, Revolusi.

The Shout! Awards was created to give recognition to those who have made a great impact and or creative breakthroughs in Malaysian music, film, TV and radio with winners of each category determined through a combination of online and SMS voting. The show aims to reward the most-deserving artistes, actors, radio and TV faces.

The eventful show reached a climax when Jaclyn Victor appeared on stage to pay tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

It was clear that the hordes of people who had come to watch the show were undeniably Jackson fans as well. They cheered and roared loudly as she began to sing You Are Not Alone and Heal The World. The performance was indeed moving, with a full vocal choir backing her, as well as featuring guest rap artiste Reefa and musician Aubrey Suwito.

In a press release, Jaclyn said: “I am greatly honoured to have been selected to perform a tribute for Michael Jackson. I am still very upset about his death and I will do my best to do justice to him and his songs. God bless you, Michael Joseph Jackson!”

Jaclyn later picked the “Power Vocal” award right after her performance. In the Film and TV category, cartoon duo Upin and Ipin won “Best On Screen Chemistry” (pair), while Naz from the Breakfast Show walked away with “Favourite TV Host” trophy. Field Trip USA won “Favourite TV Programme” (non drama) while Ghost won “Fresh TV Series” Award.

As the show was winding down, announcers had rapper Sean Kingston return to the stage to present Joe Flizzow the Flava Award (Hip-Hop/R&B Awards). Kingston then wrapped up the riveting show with his hit singles Beautiful Girls, Fire Burning and Take You There. The crowd was certainly in awe!

But, who you may ask, got the coveted Stylo Award?

Actress Dynaz Mokhtar got that honour while Marion Caunter and Faizal Tahir were crowned Hot Chick and Hot Guy Award respectively. Three cheers for the Shout! Awards.
