Goldilocks And The Three Bears musical coming to town
By ANGELIN YEOH
WHO can forget the story of Goldilocks, who wandered into a forest and made herself feel right at home in a place that belonged to three bears? In the story, Goldilocks helped herself to a bowl of porridge that belonged to baby bear and even broke his chair. Of course, the three bears were not amused by Goldilocks’ antics when they found out about it later.
For many years, parents have been using the story of Goldilocks And The Three Bears as a lesson for children to be mindful of items that belong to others.
As treat for children and the young at heart, Goldilocks And The Three Bears will be showing on May 4 to May 11 at PJ Live Arts, Jaya One in Petaling Jaya in Selangor.
Presented by Singapore Repertory Theatre’s The Little Company, the 45-minute long production will feature music and lyrics written by award-winning duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
The duo are noted for funny lyrics and catchy tunes that will appeal to both adults and kids.
In a media release, Drewe said the duo are thrilled to be a part of Goldilocks And The Three Bears.
“We have applied the same basic rules to the story; that it should be witty, tuneful, memorable and entertaining to both children and adult. Hopefully, we have told it in an inspiring and theatrical way,” said Drewe.
For Gaurav Kripalani, the artistic and managing director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT); it’s the kind of story that is worth telling again and again. But this time, in the form of a whimsical theatre musical.
“I love fairy tales and I want to let children of today experience the story in way that is fun,” said Gaurav in a phone interview from Singapore.
Gaurav believes young audience members will not only be laughing away at Goldilocks’s mischief, they could also learn some important life lessons, an aspect that would definitely please the adults tagging along.
“The musical will include some messages about the environment. They will also learn important values like loyalty and instill a sense of respect for other people regardless of who they are.”
He added the musical will not only be told from Goldilocks’s perspective.
“I guess most of us are used to the fairy tale being told from Goldilocks’ perspective. But for this musical, the story will start from the bears’ perspective.”
But parents should not fret, as according to Gaurav, these are no grouchy bears.
“Young audiences will love them because they are big and cuddly (laughs)!” Gaurav added Goldilocks And The Three Bears is part of “a trilogy of trios”. Previously, The Little Company has staged Three Little Pigs. The company plans to bring the tale of Three Billy Goats to these parts soon as part of its next set of trios.
