'Bates Motel' to premiere on US TV in March
Bates Motel, a series inspired by the film Psycho, will be broadcast on the US pay TV channel A&E from March 18, 2013.
Psycho is one of director Alfred Hitchcock's major works. The fictional drama Bates Motel will take the form of a prequel that will delve into the childhood of Norman Bates, the mentally deranged motel owner.
The series will try to explain the hero's schizophrenia through his complicated unhealthy relationship with his mother, which led to his becoming one of cinema's most renowned killers.
Anthony Perkins played Bates in 1960 and the part has now been taken on by Freddie Highmore, the British actor who starred in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Arthur And The Invisibles.
Up In The Air and Source Code actress Vera Farmiga will play his mother, Norma Bates.
The ten episodes of this psychological drama were conceived by Carlton Cuse, the mastermind behind Lost, and Kerry Ehrin, the producer of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.
