Mean girl role for Krysten Ritter
By Rachael Boon
Actress Krysten Ritter says her turn as a mean girl in a new TV sitcom is her biggest role so far.
When told by a friend that she would be great playing the mean character in a new television sitcom, not only was American actress Krysten Ritter not offended, but she embraced it with open arms.
“My friends thought it sounded like a really fun character, something I could do well. They loved it, they thought it sounded like the most crazy idea ever,” she says over the telephone from her home in Los Angeles.
Ritter, 30, plays Chloe, an off-beat con artist-slash-party girl with sociopathic tendencies, in Don’t Trust The B---- In Apartment 23, which currently airs on Star World (Astro Ch 711) on Mondays, 8.25pm.
In this odd couple comedy series, Chloe is the fiery antagonist to Dreama Walker’s June, a wholesome, naive small town girl who moves to New York with big dreams.
Ritter, who looks the complete opposite of the typical Hollywood bottled blonde with her long black locks, has probably recognised that she has carved out a niche for herself with non-mainstream, supporting roles.
You might have seen her in the romantic comedy Confessions Of A Shopaholic (2009) as a flighty best friend to a shopping addict, or as Jane Margolis, the heroin-abuser girlfriend of drug addict Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in the Emmy Award-winning dark comedy Breaking Bad.
She also thinks Chloe is her biggest role yet.
“Yes, for sure, and I don’t think I even realised that when I took this job. I always approach every job the same way, and I never thought this would be such a big deal, to get a lead on a network show. It took a minute to get used to it.
“I see her as a larger-than-life force of nature. In terms of the show, it’s a title she owns and I own as an actress. It’s almost empowering. In real life, if a guy called me that, he’d be kicked to the curb.”
Season One earned the show more than six million viewers in the United States and the series was renewed for a second season in May. The Hollywood Reporter says: “Ritter makes this show, like virtually everything else in which she has appeared, well worth your time.”
Behind all those eccentric onscreen characters she plays, Ritter says she is really a sweetheart brimming with positivity.
Bringing that to Chloe’s mildly psychotic persona, she cheerily says: “I’ve always been a very positive person, putting a positive spin on things, looking on the bright side, a glass half-full kind of girl. I try to bring that to Chloe. That helps to counter-balance her evil and makes her likeable.”
Her sunshine personality aside, it is not a good idea to get into the bad books of Ritter, who is able to stand up for herself perfectly well. She recalls a particularly memorable don’t-mess-with-me moment: “When I was a teenager living in a models’ apartment, there was a girl who wasn’t nice to me, so I put cockroaches in her bed and in her suitcase.”
Ritter, who started out as a model at the age of 15, explains, “I’m ashamed of myself but she deserved it. She made my life hell with tiny manipulative things, like taking my appointment sheet and lying that she didn’t know what happened.”
Now that she is older, she has mellowed. “I’m 30 years old, I just don’t deal with it, it’s not worth it. Life is short, I want to have a good time. You’ve gotta shake it off, move on and turn the other way.”
Her advice to others on how to remain in control is: “Don’t get caught up in all this, focus on what you’re doing because you never know what’s around the corner, and you have to fend for yourself. Stay true to yourself.”
She is also very much a “girly-girl with supportive friends”, and she says she becomes close friends with those she works with, including her Shopaholic co-star Isla Fisher.
Her boyfriend, actor Brian Geraghty, also keeps her sane when things go wrong.
She says, “I’ve got a great man in my life. If I get worked up, he helps me. During moments when I go into a frenzy, he’s really good at talking me off the ledge.” — The Straits Times Singapore/Asia News Network
