New craze

Bridesmaids and fighting teenagers dominate the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, while lovestruck vampires barely get noticed.

It seems the vampires are losing their sting in this year’s MTV Movie Awards. Based on MTV’s nominations list, the fourth instalment of the hugely popular Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, managed to garner only two nominations for the June 3 awards show.

This comes as a surprise to many as the vampire-themed film series has been a crowd favourite at the awards for the past three years. Twilight received five nominations in 2009, four in 2010 for New Moon and another five for Eclipse last year.

As such, Twihards (Twilight fans) are banking on the two nods it managed to pull in – Movie Of The Year and Best Kiss. Though the series has won both in the preceeding years, something tells me that they shouldn’t keep their hopes up too high this time around.

Films like Bridesmaids (pic left) are serving up serious competition to Twilight Saga

This year, the MTV audience has their hearts set on the gorgeous cast of The Hunger Games and the quirky ladies of Bridesmaids, each of which earned an impressive eight nominations.

The Hunger Games, the critically-acclaimed science fiction action film, secured nominations for Best Fight, Best Cast and Best On-Screen Transformation. Leading lady Jennifer Lawrence and co-star Josh Hutcherson received nominations for Best Female and Male Performance respectively, while Australian heartthrob Liam Hemsworth got a nod for Best Breakthrough Performance.

However, The Hunger Games cast members aren’t the only ones used to putting up a fight.

The cat-fighting ladies of Bridesmaids are serving up some serious competition themselves, having had the advantage of being nominated in the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards earlier this year.

Comedians Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy received nominations for Best Female Performance and Best Breakthrough Performance respectively. Plus, the two will be going head-to-head for the Best Comedic Performance award.

The film also scooped up nominations for Best Gut-Wrenching Performance and Best On-Screen Dirt Bag, two new categories introduced by the network. Best Music, Best Cast and Best On-Screen Transformation are other newly-minted categories.

The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids will join the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, on the race towards the coveted Movie Of The Year title. Rounding out the category are Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and The Help.

MTV also announced that the awards show will continue to live up to its outrageous and irreverent reputation with the help of British funnyman Russell Brand. The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star, known for his dry humour and cheeky commentary, will be hosting the award show for the first time. Presenters Emma Stone, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Wahlberg, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Adam Sandler, Emma Watson, Charlize Theron and many others will join Brand on stage.

Audiences can also expect a “fun” time from the show, which will be held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, as indie pop band Fun will entertain with its smash hit We Are Young. Meanwhile, rapper Wiz Khalifa is slated to perform his single Work Hard, Play Hard for the first time on stage.

The primetime telecast of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards will air on June 4, 11pm on MTV (Astro Ch 713). Viewers can also vote for their favourite nominees now at MovieAwards.MTV.com.
