A girl fakes love to avenge her father’s death in Injustice.
WHILE Tiffany Leong and William San make an adorable couple in Ntv7’s latest Mandarin drama series Injustice, the chatty pair say that there is more than meets the eye.
In a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur, the stars related that in the series, they appear as a happily married couple – but the wife has a hidden agenda. She is out to destroy her husband’s family, to fulfil her mother’s deathbed wish – exact revenge for her father’s death.
The 25-episode local production is set against the background of an age-old tea business, and revolves around three women whose lives are intertwined. Brought together by chance, they become divided by fate and end up turning against one another.
Tense moment: (from left) Jian Shuman and her husband Zhao Yufan with her two friends He Jingchun (portrayed by Emily Lim) and Zhao Yutian (Chris Tong) as well as his parents Mrs Zhao (Yu Lisa) and Zhao Shilin (Phua Chee Kin) in the series. Injustice (also known as Xue Hu Die meaning “blood butterfly” in Mandarin) reminds us that fate never deals an even hand in life and shows how some decisions that one makes can sometimes result in a lifetime of regrets.
Leong plays the vengeful Jian Shuman, who embodies the blood butterfly, while San portrays her loving husband, the ever-forgiving Zhao Yufan.
The strong-willed and independent Shuman had a tough childhood growing up with a mentally ill mother amid hardship and poverty after witnessing her father’s tragic death from a fall caused by Yufan’s father.
The reckless and ambitious Yufan is the younger of the Zhao brothers whose relationship with their father is strained because he favours the elder son.
When Yufan meets Shuman, he falls deeply in love with her. The money-minded Shuman agrees to marry him, and he starts doing well in his career as a result of her encouragement.
Revenge in mind: Husband and wife Zhao Yufan (played by William San) and Jian Shuman (Tiffany Leong) get married for totally different reasons, in Ntv7’s Mandarin drama series Injustice. “Yufan loves his wife so much that he continues to love her despite learning of her plan to wreck his family to avenge her parents’ sorry fate,” offered the boyish-looking San, 34,
On her deeply disturbed character, Leong, 24, explained: “Shuman cannot help herself as she still suffers nightmares about her father’s death.”
While shooting the series, San and Leong suffered a bout of food poisoning, and San was down with hives after taking the wrong medication.
“I could barely keep my eyes open after taking the medication,” said San.
“And I could barely stand, and kept vomitting between takes,” said Leong who will next co-star with San in TV series Tribulation Of Life.
“I will never eat cockles again!” declared San, who lost about 5kg within a week as a result of the food poisoning. “Luckily, my wardrobe consisted of slim-cut suits.”
“Mine even included some Lady Gaga-inspired costumes!” Leong added.
The stellar cast also includes Golden Awards best actor nominees Zzen Zhang and Wee Kheng Ming plus Alan Yun, Chris Tong, Emily Lim and Wincci Soo.
Injustice airs over Ntv7 at 10pm, from Monday to Thursday.
