> THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) continues to entertain audience at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), KLCC, on Saturday (8.30pm) and Sunday (3pm). Slated under the Odyssey series, all concerts will be conducted by the MPO’s conductor laureate, Kees Bakels.
Symphony No.95 in C minor, composed by Joseph Haydn, will open the concerts with a bang. This work, claimed as “the new grand overture”, was pronounced by every scientific ear to be a wonderful composition. Next comes Violin Concerto composed by Igor Stravinsky, which premiered in Berlin in 1931 where Stravinsky conducted the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Collaborating with the MPO to perform this work is violinist Julian Rachlin. A prolific recording artiste, he has made recordings on Warner Classics, Sony Classical and ONYX Classics labels.
The MPO closes the showcases with a rendition of Symphony No.12 in D minor (Op.112) – “The Year 1917” which composer Dmitri Shostakovich dedicated “to the memory of Vladimir Lenin”.
