The vocal ones of RTM Radio DJ Impian
By AZHARIAH KAMIN
After one month of experiencing being a radio deejay, the 12 finalists of RTM Radio DJ Impian will be slugging it out at the grand final tomorrow at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
The group is divided into four teams according to the channels they are competing in.
Aptly called RTM Radio DJ Impian (RTM Radio Dream DJ), the contest aims to secure four new deejays for its core radio stations – Nasional FM (Malay station), Traxx FM (English station), Ai FM (Chinese station) and Minnal FM (Tamil station).
Traxx FM finalists are Mary (Maryanne Raymond, 19, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah), Jeremy (Jeremy Teo Zhenwee, 21, Kuala Lumpur) and Ummi (Ummi Nadhirah Rosli, 18, Kuala Lumpur).
Gim (Lim Gim Shin, 26, Kuala Lumpur), Ying (Then Pei Ying, 24, Kuching, Sarawak) and Hui (Steven Goh Hong Hui, 23, Kuala Lumpur) are vying for the top spot on Ai FM.
The finalists for Minnal FM are Jamuna (Jamuna Velliathum, 22, Penang), Dhayalan (Dhayalan Sharmugam, 20, Kuala Lumpur) and Kristna (Kristinaderi Sundaram, 25, Kuala Lumpur). It’s interesting to note that the contestants are from different backgrounds and different parts of the country, but sharing the same goal.
Pilot Ross took one-month leave to take part in the competition.
“I always have this love for deejaying since I was small. I guess I have to give this a try. Besides, when flying an aircraft I only have the cabin crew and passengers to show off my skills, while this competition is giving me a bigger audience,” he said with a laugh.
“I took up chemical engineering and worked as an engineer for a while but I realised it wasn’t really for me. Luckily, my parents understand and they are very supportive,” she said.
Jeremy who has just completed his studies in psychology at a university in Australia said: “I decided to give this (RTM Radio DJ Impian) a try after I saw the advertisement. Who knows, I might be able to use my psychology background in my deejaying as it is applicable in every field.”
And there is Gim whose boss gave him a one-month leave to take part in this competition.
According to RTM radio broadcast director Dr Syafiq Alfonse Abdullah, the four winners will be selected based entirely on SMS voting.
He added that the contest works as a platform to discover potential deejays in the hope of improving the quality of the broadcast industry.
The contestants will be judged on fluency and diction, special talent, character (voice, style and personality), their ability to recognise celebrities and music as well as general knowledge.
One champion will be picked from one station and the winner will receive RM15,000 cash, a Perodua Kancil, a contract with RTM and sponsored prizes. The rest will receive RM5,000 each.
